The Master of Public Health (MPH) Program at The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) School of Public and Population Health (SPPH) prepares students to protect and improve health at the population level through applied training in public health practice, data-informed decision-making, and community partnership.

UTMB’s public health program has been accredited since 2002 by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH).

What You’ll Study

Across concentrations, MPH students build practical skills to:

  • Describe and assess population health using quantitative and qualitative approaches
  • Design, implement, and evaluate programs, policies, and interventions
  • Work effectively with communities and cross-sector partners
  • Communicate public health information clearly and responsibly

Foundational Competencies

All MPH graduates demonstrate the 22 MPH Foundational Competencies, along with concentration-specific competencies.


MPH Concentrations

  • Bioethics (MPH) - Ethical analysis for public health, health care, and research—focused on real-world decision-making.
  • Biostatistics (MPH) - Applied statistical methods and data analysis to support public health and biomedical research. Online program (Fall 2026).
  • Epidemiology (MPH) - Study design and analytic approaches to understand patterns, causes, and prevention of disease in populations.
  • Public Health Practice (MPH) - Applied training for roles across public health agencies, health systems, nonprofits, and community organizations.
  • MD/MPH - An option for UTMB medical students seeking integrated clinical and public health training.
  • PhD/MPH - An option for UTMB doctoral trainees who want added training in population health and public health practice.
