PhD students at UTMB have the opportunity to earn the Master of Public Health degree while enrolled in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. MPH training provides select students with the knowledge, skills, and values
needed to succeed in public health research and practice careers.
Our MPH Program includes coursework and learning experiences that prepare graduates to contribute to and apply the evidence base supporting population and public health.
MPH Degree Requirements
Requirements for all MPH students, including dual degree students, include the following:
- MPH core courses,
- MPH concentration courses,
- Applied Practice Experience, and
- Integrative Learning Experience.
Once students meet these requirements, up to 12-credit hours from doctoral course work may be counted as dual credits toward the MPH degree (for most students, 8-credit hours may be dual counted).
Prior to taking MPH courses, students must discuss plans for the dual degree with their doctoral advisor and notify their PhD program director.
How to Apply
UTMB Doctoral students must have completed PhD qualifying exams prior to applying for the Master of Public Health Program.
To apply: complete an application through SOPHAS Express (including application fee, demographic info, two letters of reference, personal statement, and transcripts [from UTMB and other institutions attended].
The personal statement and letters of reference should specifically address the student's interest in public health and ability to complete the degree. One of the letters of reference should be from the student's doctoral advisor, and they must state that the student will be allowed the time necessary to complete the Public Health coursework and requirements.
