Faculty Profile

  • Dr. Fonseca completed her Ph.D in the Department of Anatomy at the University of São Paulo’s Institute of Biomedical Sciences in 2009, where she served as a teaching assistant in Basic Human Anatomy and the Anatomy of the Locomotor System. She then pursued postdoctoral studies in the endocrinology department at the University of Miami, finishing in 2014. Following her postdoc, she served as a Scientist at Rush University for five years and then at the University of Chicago for six years before accepting her current role at the University of Texas Medical Branch. Dr. Fonseca’s research centers on the impact of thyroid hormone signaling on DNA methylation in the neonatal liver. Her achievements in the field include selection as a Young Investigator by the Latin American Thyroid Society and receipt of the American Thyroid Association's prestigious Thyroid Research Grant in 2014. During her postdoctoral fellowship, her research was featured as a topic highlight at the American Thyroid Association’s Annual Meeting. Over recent years, she has been invited to presented at numerous scientific symposiums and will co-chair the Parallel Session on Thyroid Hormone and Metabolism at this year’s Annual Meeting. An accomplished scientist, Dr. Fonseca has contributed to 39 peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals, including Nature Communications, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Diabetes, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. She also served on the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports, a journal from Nature Publishing Group. Outside the lab, Dr. Fonseca enjoys spending time with her family and her two whippet dogs. A passionate plant collector, she has transformed her home into a lush greenhouse filled with an array of unique plants.
