What is OneDrive?

OneDrive is cloud-based storage space for your personal work files. Files may be easily saved to and from OneDrive and SharePoint using the OneDrive sync client (Windows 10 required) or through a web browser. OneDrive also has a mobile app that can be downloaded from your device's app service.

If your computer runs the MacOS, Linux or an earlier version of Windows, you’ll have to use a web browser to  access SharePoint and OneDrive.

A place that you and your team members can collaborate on files and digital content. It is set up to facilitate easier collaboration and communication with team members.
  • Files shared by default.
  • The SharePoint admins or site owners are in control.
  • A file’s lifecycle is tied to the SharePoint site, not your account.
  • If you have been given appropriate site permissions, you can grant file/folder access others.

In OneDrive, each UTMB employee will have a total of 1 terabyte (1TB) of storage space.

  • Windows computers running modern versions of Windows 10 and Office will be able to access OneDrive through the OneDrive sync client or a web browser. Contact the IS Service Desk at (409) 772-5200 for details.
  • UTMB MacOS computers are not able to take advantage of the OneDrive for Mac application, because Macs do not join the UTMB domain in the way that Windows computers do. Mac users must visit the office.com web portal in order to access OneDrive. Visit the MacOS FAQs for more information.
  • Important: The OneDrive client will only sync with Windows computers on the UTMB network. If you aren’t on the UTMB network, access to your OneDrive data is available via the office.com web portal.
OneDrive is used for your work files while SharePoint Online is used for our work files.

OneDrive

  • A place where you can store your files in the cloud, and access them from any device, or share them with others.
  • Accessible only to you by default.
  • You own all the files stored in OneDrive.
  • The lifecycle of your OneDrive (and its contents) is tied to your UTMB domain account.
  • You have the power to grant file/folder access to others.

SharePoint Online

  • A place that you and your team members can collaborate on files and digital content. It is set up to facilitate easier collaboration and communication with team members.
  • Files are shared by default.
  • The SharePoint admins or site owners are in control.
  • A file’s lifecycle is tied to the SharePoint site, not to your UTMB domain account.
  • If you have been given appropriate site permissions, you can grant file/folder access others.
OneDrive
  • OneDrive is for a specific user's work-related files—when that user leaves UTMB, those files will go away after a short period of time
  • Every OneDrive user can share their files with anyone in the world
SharePoint
  • Files stored in either of the 'Departments' or 'Collaboration' SharePoint folders are not tied to a specific user’s account, their existence is managed by the department site owner or admins
  • SharePoint's 'Departments' folder is for internal-only departmental files. Access will be locked down with Tivoli roles once S:drive content has been migrated
  • 'Collaboration' is for departmental files that need to be shared across UTMB or the world
Yes, from the Collaboration site for departmental files, and your OneDrive for your personal work files. Once S: drive content has been migrated, the  SharePoint Department folder will be controlled by Tivoli management.
