UTMB Anesthesiology was my number one choice for residency when I applied in 2019. I chose this program, primarily due to the community. The residents have each other’s backs, and the faculty really care about seeing you succeed. I’ve made life-long friends during my 4 years here at UTMB and I am eternally grateful for that. In addition, I feel well prepared for life after UTMB as an anesthesiologist, and I know I always have a community to lean on even after I graduate.
Tyler Hunter (CA-2)
Hi all, my name is Tyler Hunter, and I am a current CA-2. My time at UTMB has been an amazing experience! I am originally from Southlake, Texas and completed medical school at Kansas City University. My application cycle was disrupted by the pandemic and interviews were all held virtual. Because of this, a priority for me during my application was to find a program that fostered a positive culture for me to learn in and grow during four years of training. If you are an applicant reading this, please know that UTMB genuinely does provide an exceptional training environment! The sense of community and support here at UTMB has exceeded expectations and is something I am very grateful for. I think that having the combination of a tight-knit anesthesia community with a strong clinical experience allows a trainee to realize the full potential of residency training. Melody Bahrampour (CA-2)
Hi! I’m a current CA-2 at UTMB. I graduated from UTD and did my medical school at UT Health Science Center in San Antonio. I chose to do my residency training at UTMB because of the comradery among faculty and residents. We get extensive training and experience while still having the free time to explore the island! There are amazing faculty at this program that love to teach providing a welcoming environment to learn and thrive in. I’m so happy to be at a program that has such a collegial environment where everyone is willing to help one another.
Kiera Addison (CA-1)
Hi Everyone! I am a current CA-1 from Sumter, South Carolina. I graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina. The anesthesiology program at UTMB is a hidden gem. We have state of the art facilities, unique clinical experiences and brilliant faculty and residents tucked away on the East End of Galveston TX. I completed the “traditional” intern year at St. Joseph’s Medical Center which provided a unique opportunity to serve the underserved population of Houston Texas. The transition into CA-1 year has been challenging but the pleasant and supportive environment created by faculty and residents has made it more manageable. As I get comfortable with autonomy in the OR, I do not feel the need to hesitate in reaching out to an upper-level resident or faculty when I have a question or need assistance. For those that need structured didactics: Wednesday – Friday mornings offer protected educational time for residents with Friday’s being geared toward the CA-1 class. I am grateful to train at a program that is invested in my learning, growth and development as a future leader in anesthesiology.
Taylor Dykes (CB)
I am from Knoxville, Tennessee, graduated from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, and am just starting my first year of Anesthesiology training! I was fortunate enough to couples match into this excellent residency program, and I am so excited to be at UTMB for residency. Our program provides broad clinical training, state-of-the-art facilities, and, most importantly, a supportive culture that fosters the growth of residents. I am on the split year track (Splititern), so I have already had exposure to the OR, and it has been fantastic! Orientation month provides extensive guided learning to ease one's transition from medical school to being an anesthesia resident. I have been thoroughly impressed by the faculty's eagerness to teach and am looking forward to the rest of my experience in residency! Outside of medicine, I love to be outside. Galveston offers plenty of fishing, kayaking, and warm weather! The internal medicine department (who splitterns rotate with regularly) even has a large group of people playing pickleball weekly that I play with. I am excited for the rest of my experience here at UTMB and growing with my co-residents to become well-rounded anesthesiologists prepared for a successful career.
