Care During the First Hours of Life

  1. Check identity.
  2. Measure weight, length, head circumference, and axillary temperature.
  3. Give 1 mg vitamin K I.M. to promote synthesis of coagulation factors. This prevents hemorrhagic disease of the newborn.
  4. Instill erythromycin ointment in each eye to prevent gonococcal opthalmia.
  5. Obtain blood from the heel to determine the blood glucose level. The level should be > 45 mg/dl.
