On the strength of an $11 million contribution from The Sealy & Smith Foundation, UTMB established a comprehensive multidisciplinary organ transplant resource called the Texas Transplant Center in 2007. The Center strives to enhance the University’s regional and national reputation in transplantation and provide tertiary care services previously unavailable to our patients and referring physicians.

The Center is an integral part of the university’s Department of Surgery, widely recognized as one of academic medicine’s premier surgery programs. Organ Transplantation at UTMB has a long tradition of excellence; founded almost 50 years ago, it has been a pioneering force in the field since then.

Among our goals, we seek to increase the chances of Texans who need a transplant--especially those in the Houston/Galveston area--of getting an organ transplant. With Galveston in Southwest Transplant Alliance organ procurement organization, a different organization than Houston, patients can double list at UTMB for organ transplantation to increase their chance of transplant.

We're working to broaden the types of transplants conducted at UTMB, and, through our first class research activities, we work to provide innovative treatments from bench to bed-side.

Regardless of the type of procedure, our surgeons and medical subspecialists work very closely to ensure that our transplantation patients receive the most advanced treatments possible. Our Texas Transplant Center care team also works diligently with our patients, their families and you, the referring physician, to provide constant feedback regarding your patient’s health status.  We believe good communication is the key to providing exemplary patient care.
