Two members of the University of Texas Medical Branch's Department of Pathology were recently elected to the 2025 class of fellows with the American Academy of Microbiology.
Drs. Alexander Bukreyev and Jere McBride, UTMB professors in the Department of Pathology are two of 65 Academy fellows for 2025.
“It's truly an honor to be elected as a Fellow of the Academy,” said Bukreyev. “I've dedicated my career to the study of emerging viral infections and subsequent development of vaccine and antibody treatments against the illnesses caused by these viruses, so I am looking forward to expanding these lines of research while establishing new collaborations.”
Members are chosen through a highly selective, peer nomination and review process based on their records of scientific achievement and original contributions, service, and education and mentoring that have advanced microbiology.
"For my entire career, the worlds of microbiology, cell biology, and pathology have driven my deep passion for understanding the cellular and molecular interactions that underpin infection and immune evasion by pathogens," said McBride. "I'm eager to share my insights and collaborate with my peers as we work toward a healthier future."
New fellows are elected on an annual basis, and this year alone the American Academy of Microbiology received 146 nominations for fellowship from across the globe. The organization has over 2,600 fellows representing all subspecialities of the microbial sciences who are involved in basic and applied research, teaching, public health, industry and government service.
