We are proud to highlight Dr. Camilo Mosquera's most recent publication titled “Maxillary and Midface Reconstruction in Non-ideal Situations: Troubleshooting in a Difficult Surgical Field,” featured in Atlas of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinics of North America. This paper addresses the unique challenges encountered when reconstructing maxillary and midface defects in complex surgical environments, such as vessel-depleted necks or irradiated fields.

The article provides practical strategies for overcoming these obstacles, emphasizing meticulous preoperative planning, intraoperative flexibility, and careful postoperative monitoring. It outlines special considerations for free tissue transfer and presents alternative reconstructive techniques, including the use of local and regional flaps as effective options when free tissue transfer may not be feasible. Additionally, the study highlights the role of maxillofacial prosthetics as a valuable alternative in select patients.
