We are excited to announce the successful completion of our first HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate) Course Training, "From Sim Lab to OR: Developing Expertise in HoLEP Surgery." Directed by Dr. Bilal Farhan serves as an Associate Professor of Urology and the Program Director of Voiding Dysfunction and Pelvic Reconstruction who established the HoLEP service at UTMB Urology in 2023, this course offered our residents a comprehensive introduction to this advanced and minimally invasive surgical technique.
HoLEP is an innovative procedure used worldwide to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a common condition in older men. Unlike traditional open or robotic surgeries, HoLEP utilizes a specialized laser to precisely remove excess prostate tissue, improving urinary flow with minimal invasiveness. Its benefits include effective treatment for larger prostates, suitability for patients on anticoagulants, same-day discharge, and faster recovery compared to other methods.
The course combined hands-on experience in the simulation lab with live surgical demonstrations, providing residents with a solid foundation in HoLEP techniques. The training, led by Dr. Farhan and our expert faculty, was highly praised by participants for its comprehensive approach and practical value.
As Dr. Farhan advises, "Prostate surgeries offer a range of choices, each tailored to specific conditions. Consult your urologist to determine the best fit for your health. Informed decisions lead to brighter outcomes. Your health, your choice."
This training marks a significant milestone for our department and sets a new standard in our surgical education programs. We look forward to continuing this tradition of excellence in the future.
