In November, the UTMB Department of Surgery held its first session for the William J. Mileski, MD Lectureship Series. This lecture series will bring leaders with seminal contributions in the field of trauma and acute care surgery to share education,
thoughts, and experiences with our staff and faculty, exemplifying the UTMB organizational goal of “Working Together to Work Wonders.”
The William Mileski, MD Lectureship will join two other lectureships within the Department of Surgery, namely the Vincent R. Conti, MD Lectureship, and Courtney M. Townsend, Jr. Lectureship. The three lectureships are named after providers whose major
contributions to the medical field and UTMB have driven significant change and support throughout their time with the organization. The Dr. Conti Lectureship Series focuses on contributors to the field of cardiothoracic surgery, and the Dr. Townsend
Lectureship Series focuses on thought leaders in surgical training & education.
For the inaugural William J. Mileski lecture, Mayur Patel, MD, MPH spoke on “ICU Delirium and Issues of Survivorship.” Dr. Patel is an Associate Professor in Surgical Sciences at the Vanderbilt University Division of Acute Care Surgery.
According to his bio from the Critical Illness, Brain Dysfunction, and Survivorship Center, “His current research interests focus on brain dysfunction and critical illness, as related to traumatic brain injury (TBI), post-traumatic stress
disorder (PTSD), long-term cognitive impairment, dementia, and other aspects of ICU survivorship.”

provide for the University. Future speakers will be announced, and anyone affiliated with UTMB is welcome to attend.
