Several UTMB Surgeons and support staff attended the recent meeting of the Texas Surgical Society in Lubbock, Texas. During the meeting, UTMB Department of Surgery Chair Dr. Douglas Tyler honored general surgery resident Camilo Velasquez Mejia, MD, as a Raleigh R. Ross Scholar. The Scholarship also comes with a monetary award for both Dr. Camilo and the UTMB Department of Surgery. Several UTMB Department of Surgery faculty gave lectures, including:

  • Dr. Douglas Tyler: "Educational Value and Quality of Surgical Care in a Maximum Security Correctional Hospital"
  • Dr. Mellick Sykes: "Endovascular Covered Stent Use for Blunt Popliteal Artery Injury"
  • Dr. Michael Silva: "Growth and Change in Peripheral Vascular Interventions through the 2000s: Outpatient Atherectomy Trends and Concerns"
  • Dr. Steven Wolf: "Does Academic Research Contribution Conflict with Clinical Activity? A Study of Academic Surgical Institutions in Texas"
  • Dr. Ravi Radhakrishnan: "Type II Choledochal Cyst Arising from the Cystic Duct" and "Trends in Congenital Anomalies: A Review of the Texas Birth Defects Registry, 1999-2014"

The members look forward to continuing their conversations at the fall 2022 meeting of The Texas Surgical Society, which will be held in Dallas.
