Section of Thoracic & Esophageal Surgery

Roman PetrovWelcome to the Section of Thoracic & Esophageal Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch, centered in Galveston, Texas. Our section faculty have a wealth of experience and have distinguished themselves amongst their peers locally, regionally, and nationally.

We provide state-of-the-art, evidence-based, compassionate care to our patients with a full spectrum of thoracic pathology. The clinical focus of the section is the application of cutting-edge minimally invasive, endoscopic, and robotic interventions for patients with non-cardiac thoracic conditions.

We offer thoracic surgery expertise at our three convenient campuses in Southeast Texas: Galveston, Clear Lake, and League City. We offer advanced modern care for a full spectrum of thoracic conditions and have multidisciplinary treatment teams concentrating on thoracic oncology and benign conditions. Our oncology team is concentrating on our in-depth cancer program with screening and interdisciplinary treatment for lung and esophageal cancer, metastatic lung disease, chest wall tumors, and mediastinal masses. We also have benign pulmonary program options for patients with many conditions requiring surgical interventions, such as tracheobronchomalacia, diaphragm paralysis, and lung volume reduction.

We are experts in benign foregut disease and offer state-of-the-art evaluation and minimally invasive and advanced endoscopic management of GERD, paraesophageal hernias, esophageal diverticula, Zenker’s diverticulum, esophageal motility disorders, median arcuate ligament syndrome, superior mesenteric artery syndrome, and gastroparesis. We have unique expertise in achalasia care and POEM procedures.

Our chest wall pathology offerings include care for thoracic outlet syndrome, rib fractures and nonunion, and developmental chest wall conditions, including pectus deformities. We also have an active myasthenia program where we offer minimally invasive VATS and robotic thymectomy. We perform robotic sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis, electrical storm, or uncontrolled cardiac arrhythmias as well.
