Food insecurity is defined as “the state of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food."
Studies show food insecurity is more common in students than it is in the general population, that being
over 11%. With this in mind, the Picnic Basket has stepped in to assist.
If you are a student experiencing food insecurity, we are here to help!
The Picnic Basket has partnered with Galveston County Food Bank and the community of Galveston to provide free food for UTMB students in need.
Your Student ID is required for check-in and you must complete a one-time questionnaire required by the Galveston County Food Bank. This form can be completed at the pantry, but can also be completed ahead of time.

STUDENT VOLUNTEERS
The Picnic Basket is run by students for students. Whether you want to become a part of the executive board, or simply want to help, you are welcome! With a low-hour commitment (most students chose to commit 4 hours a week) students can play a critical role in helping their community without overwhelming their academic schedules. These hours can count towards a number for volunteer hour needs.

DONATIONS
Are you interested in donating to the Picnic Basket?
The Picnic Basket accepts donations during Office of Student Life business hours Monday through Friday.
If your donation is a large donation that needs load-in assistance, please make sure to send an email using the contact form so that an appointment can be made. The Picnic Basket has been successful due to the assistance from the UTMB, Galveston, and Galveston County community.
