Jacob Moses, PhD

Assistant Professor
Department of Bioethics & Health Humanities

About Me

Jacob Moses is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Bioethics & Health Humanities and a faculty member of the Institute for Bioethics & Health Humanities. Before joining the faculty at UTMB, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Medical Humanities and Social Medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He received his PhD in History of Science, with a secondary graduate field in Science, Technology & Society, from Harvard University. Before pursuing his doctoral training, he worked for several years at The Hastings Center, an independent bioethics research institute.

Dr. Moses’s research and teaching centers on the intersection of the history of medicine and public health, bioethics, and science & technology studies. He links historical and contemporary qualitative research methods to interrogate questions of knowledge, ethics, and governance. His interests include medical decision-making, public health governance, gender and sexuality, the history of emotions, the history of surgery, and the history of biomedical ethics. He investigates many of these themes in his current book project, “Medical Regret without Remorse,” which traces the history of therapeutic reversals in surgical practice from the mid-twentieth century to the present.
