Jarrel De Matas earned his BA and MA from the University of the West Indies, St Augustine, and his PhD from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Dr De Matas studies culturally informed scientific, medical, and health practices through an integrated approach to Caribbean literature, global science fiction, science studies, and postcolonial criticism. Dr. De Matas utilizes a narrative medicine and narrative ethics approach to exploring issues of health justice, bioethics, and the lived experiences of marginalized communities. His work examines how storytelling illuminates disparities in medical treatment.
In addition to his academic work, Dr. De Matas is a newspaper columnist for the Daily Express in Trinidad and Tobago. Published yearly, his book series, Opinions in Review, is a collection of his newspaper columns. Dr De Matas’s first and forthcoming academic book, contracted by Routledge, investigates Caribbean futurism through storytelling throughout the region.
