Happy Holidays from the SPECTRE Team

Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or another holiday, this time of the year is fun, relaxing, and maybe a little bit stressful. Families and friends are gathering, sometimes for the first time all year, students are home from college, new babies may be meeting extended family for the first time ever. Unfortunately, with this many people gathering indoors, all coming from different social “bubbles” there is the looming threat of sickness. As the temperatures drop and we all move indoors, winter respiratory illnesses tend to be on the rise. From your common cold and flu to COVID and RSV, any one of these may be lurking. While most cases do not become critical, children and older adults are at increased risk for severe symptoms. As cases are on the rise, so are hospitalizations, as well as urgent care and emergency room visits.

Some precautions you can take to keep you and your loved ones safe:

· If you are sick (coughing, sneezing, runny nose) avoid congregating inside or wear a mask, keep a distance from babies

· Schedule a flu, COVID, and RSV vaccine (if eligible) – ideally 2 weeks before any holiday gatherings

· Wash your hands regularly, especially if sick or around sick individuals

It is great to catch up with family and friends this time of year, sharing stories and hugs, but make sure you’re not sharing germs!
