  • Compliance requirements

    Should be clarified with mentor

    • IRB review—even if you believe your research will be exempt, submit to IRB or at least document your discussion with them
    • CITI training—for human subject’s research
    • Lab safety—for laboratory research, particularly biosafety laboratory work
    • HIPPA, data privacy and integrity—you can’t simply store data on a thumb drive, unencrypted!
    • Most of your requirements can be met on-line, asynchronously—hit the ground running
    • Other—depending on your research, there may be other requirements regarding data handling, confidentiality and simply good practices. Ignorance is no excuse—please talk with your mentor and our research administration if you have questions.

  • Planning Ahead for Your Research

The JSSOM curriculum allows flexibility for research if you plan ahead:

    • Year 1: December elective, Summer
    • Year 2: Vacation, elective and longitudinal
    • Year 3: While clerkships make it difficult, some students stay in touch with their mentor and research teams
    • Year 4: Elective time, presentations

    Keep track of deadlines:

    • Application for competitive experiences (e.g., Summer Research Program, Concentrations, etc.)
    • Presentation deadlines (e.g., National Student Research Forum, specialty and discipline meetings—local and national)
    • Planning for sources of stipends, funding
