Description: Social media is utilized as a data source and for recruiting of participants in research. While this platform offers unique opportunities in research, it raises critical ethical questions. This presentation will 1) explore current applications of social media in research, 2) discuss the ethical dilemmas associated with use of these platforms, and 3) provide tools for evaluating the ethical implications of using social media in research.
Bio: Peyton Swanson is a second-year PhD student studying Bioethics and Health Humanities, a former NHGRI iSPRinG Fellow at the National Institutes of Health and Graduate Archer Fellow. Her research focuses on biomedical innovation, rural health equity, and health policy.
Bio: Dr. Smith works on projects in research ethics, research integrity and public health ethics. As the Director of the Research Ethics Consultation Service at UTMB, Dr Smith aims to create an environment that enables ethical decision-making through openness, ongoing discussion, tailored training, and research regarding research ethics and integrity concerns.
