In a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Directors Association, Drs. James S. Goodwin, Yong-Fang-Kuo, and Mukaila Raji from the Sealy Center on Aging and others looked at the number of physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants who practice full time in nursing homes. From 2008 to 2017, the percent of full-time nursing home providers increased from 26.0% in 2008 to 44.6% in 2017. The largest increase was in nurse practitioners. Providers working full time in the nursing home is associated with better health outcomes for the approximately 1.3 million Americans who are residents in nursing homes. The percentage of nursing home residents with full-time providers continues to grow, with very large variation among nursing homes.
