Please see new video, "An Overview of Research on Aging at the Sealy Center on Aging," a special presentation at the weekly Geri Med Conference by James S. Goodwin,
MD, Brian Downer, PhD, and Huiwen Xu, PhD.
Highlights:
Dr. Goodwin began the discussion by comparing choosing to do research in aging to gardening - you may be concerned with the product (beautiful flowers, tasty vegetables) or the process (spending time alone, enjoying nature)... Researchers may be concerned with one or both.
The spectrum of research on aging in SCOA spans the disciplines of Demography, Epidemiology, Health Services, Disparities, Outcomes, Clinical Trials, Basic Research, and Qualitative Research. They target various populations, from everyone to specific groups.
Dr. Volpi, director of SCOA, is responsible for bringing large clinical trials UTMB studying comparing models of care for dementia, improving hip fracture recovery, interventions to prevent/treat sarcopenia, effect of bed rest, diet, exercise on function of older adults & more.
Researchers discussed the Mexican Health and Aging Study (MHAS) and Medicare Data. They encouraged fellows to get involved in research.
