A Message from the Executive Vice President, Provost, and Dean, John Sealy School of Medicine
Dear colleagues,
Please join me in thanking Scott C. Weaver, PhD, for his strong leadership of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology (M&I) since 2015. A renowned researcher whose contributions are reflected by an impressive record of grant support, publications, and patents, Dr. Weaver has helped elevate the department to a world-class entity in the fight against infectious diseases.
During his tenure, Dr. Weaver has prioritized faculty recruitment to support the department’s two-fold mission to educate and train outstanding future scientists, and to advance understanding of infectious diseases and immune response. He has recruited several strong additions over the past several years, positioning the department for continued growth and success. Each year since 2019, the department has ranked first for NIH funding among departments of microbiology nationwide.
Dr. Weaver earned his PhD in Molecular Biology and Virology from the University of California, San Diego, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine. He arrived at UTMB in 1994 and became a full Professor of M&I in 2001, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Pathology. He was appointed Chair ad interim of M&I in 2015, with the role becoming official in 2017.
Following his tenure as Chair of M&I, Dr. Weaver will remain an integral part of UTMB and our research enterprise, continuing his leadership as Director of the Institute for Human Infections and Immunity and Scientific Director of the Galveston National Laboratory, and as a Professor of M&I.
Sincerely yours,
Charles P. Mouton, MD, MS, MBA
