A Message from the Executive Vice President, Provost, and Dean, John Sealy School of Medicine

Please join me in extending appreciation to J. Sean Funston, MD, for his service as Chair ad interim of the Department of Anesthesiology since July 2023.

Dr. Funston has been a valued member of our faculty as well as a leader within the department. Since 2019 he has served as Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs and Medical Director of Perioperative Services in the Department of Anesthesiology. He was previously Medical Director for UTMB’s Operating Theaters for 11 years.

In addition to his 25 years of service as a faculty member, Dr. Funston is a proud UTMB alumnus. He earned his medical degree at UTMB, then remained with us to complete his Anesthesiology transitional internship and residency, followed by his Critical Care fellowship. We are grateful he has remained within our UTMB family for so many years. His knowledge and experience have been extremely beneficial as the department has grown and evolved over the years.

His leadership has been critical during this transitional period, and we look forward to his continued service.
