A Message from the Executive Vice President, Provost, and Dean, John Sealy School of Medicine
I am very happy to share that Upendra Parvathaneni, M.B., B.S., FRANZCR, will join UTMB as Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology, effective Nov. 1. He will hold the John Sealy Distinguished Centennial Chair in Radiation Oncology.
Dr. Parvathaneni has established an impressive career at the University of Washington (UW) School of Medicine, where he has served the Department of Radiation Oncology since 2006, with an adjunct appointment in the Department of Medicine. He attained the rank of full Professor in 2021. Throughout his tenure at UW, he has also been an Attending Radiation Oncologist at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, and additionally during last 10 years at the Seattle Proton Therapy Center.
Dr. Parvathaneni is an expert in the treatment of head and neck tumors and skin cancers, including rare diseases like Merkel cell carcinoma. His unique expertise encompasses all types of radiation modalities, including standard X-ray treatments, brachytherapy, proton therapy, and heavy ion neutron therapy.
He earned his medical degree at Rajah Muthiah Medical College and Hospital (now Government Medical College and Hospital Cuddalore) in Chidambaram, India, and completed extensive postgraduate training, with residencies in surgery and orthopedics, medicine and medical specialties, and radiation oncology. Following his radiation oncology residencies in New Zealand and Australia, he completed an advanced clinical fellowship in radiation oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He also holds a Teaching Scholar Certification in medical education and biomedical informatics from the University of Washington.
