A Message from the Executive Vice President, Provost, and Dean, John Sealy School of Medicine
Please join me in extending immense gratitude to C. Joan Richardson, MD, following 50-plus years of outstanding service to UTMB and the Department of Pediatrics, as she completes her service as Chair.
Dr. Richardson has built an impressive legacy at UTMB that began even before she joined our faculty. After receiving her bachelor’s degree in Zoology from the University of Texas at Austin, she came to UTMB to attend medical school. She earned her medical degree and remained at UTMB to complete her residency in Pediatrics.
She completed a fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at the University of California, San Diego/La Jolla School of Medicine. She returned to UTMB to become a faculty member in 1974.
Dr. Richardson has held numerous leadership positions in the department and the institution, serving as Medical Director of UTMB Inpatient Services from 1999 to 2007 and Assistant Dean for Faculty Practice from 2004 to 2007. She served as Vice Chair of the Department of Pediatrics from 1991 until 2008, when she was named Chair.
Dr. Richardson’s career has been characterized by her strong commitment to medical education, health care administration, faculty development, and care of the high-risk newborn. She has made an incredible impact on the lives of her trainees, colleagues, and countless patient families who express tremendous gratitude for her compassionate care of their babies and children.
As Dr. Richardson’s tenure as Chair ends Sept. 30, her outstanding career at UTMB will continue. We are grateful to count her as a cherished member of our UTMB family.
Sincerely yours,
Charles P. Mouton, MD, MS, MBA
