A Message from the Dean ad interim, John Sealy School of Medicine
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Nausheen Jamal, MD, as the Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology at the John Sealy School of Medicine, effective this summer. Dr. Jamal currently serves as Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and Associate Dean of GME and DIO at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine.
Dr. Jamal attended the University of Pennsylvania as an undergraduate and the Baylor College of Medicine, where she was chosen for AOA. She served her residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and did her fellowship in laryngology at the David
Geffen School of Medicine. She is currently completing her MBA at the Kellogg School of Management.
Dr. Jamal has overseen the rapid expansion of graduate medical education at UTRGV to 19 accredited residency and fellowship programs across five hospital partners. As department chair, Dr. Jamal has expanded clinical operations within the department
and developed a broad community affiliate network of private physicians. Her scholarship centers around resident physician well-being and resiliency, enhancing diversity, and building pipelines to medical education. She has been an active leader of
the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS), including past service as the chair of the young physicians section.
Dr. Jamal, a Houston native, is joined by her husband, Ben Plantan, Chief Marketing Officer at UTRGV, and their two children, Aiden and Sofia.
I also want to recognize the outstanding service of Brian McKinnon, MD, MBA, MPH, who has ably served as Chair ad interim. Dr. McKinnon has diligently led the department through the challenges of the COVID pandemic while enhancing research,
the residency, and expanding clinical care. He is a dedicated educator and a strong supporter of operational improvement in partnership with the health system. I want to express my profound gratitude for Dr. McKinnon’s leadership.
Sincerely yours,
Jeffrey L. Susman, MD
