A reminder about safety this holiday season

Dec 17, 2018, 00:03 AM by Stephen Hadley

Dear UTMB Colleagues:

I am writing to inform you about an incident that occurred this past weekend. According to the UTMB Police Department, a UTMB staff member was assaulted during the early morning hours on Sunday, Dec. 16, in downtown Galveston.

The Galveston Police Department is investigating the incident; however, the suspect has not yet been identified or apprehended. Therefore, students and staff are being asked to exercise additional caution when traveling to and from or while attending events during the evening and nighttime hours. Some tips that may help you stay safe include:

  • Attend gatherings in groups, watch over one another, and do not separate from your party.
  • Stay in well-lit areas, when possible, and park in a safe and secure location.
  • While you are out, please make sure that your beverages do not leave your sight.
  • If you decide to leave the gathering or event before the rest of your group, ask a trusted companion to escort you to your car or your home.
  • If you’re on campus, consider contacting the UTMB Police Department for a safety escort.
  • If you plan to consume alcohol while you’re out, be sure you always have a designated driver in place in advance of the outing.
  • Don’t depend on the availability of ride-sharing apps; these services may not be readily available when you need them.
  • Tell a friend or family member where you are going, with whom, and when you expect to return.
  • Trust your instincts: if you feel unsafe or threatened, leave the area. Contact the police, if necessary.

Keeping our students and staff members safe is a top priority at UTMB. Please take appropriate precautions to ensure your personal safety, and immediately report any suspicious behavior to police. The UTMB Police Department’s non-emergency line, (409) 772-2691, is answered 24 hours a day, but in an emergency, always dial 9-1-1 first. Please stay safe this holiday season.

Sincerely,

Dr. David L. Callender
President
