Message from the Pediatric Chair
Sanjeev Tuli MD, MEd, FAAP

Welcome to the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Medical Branch. It is an honor to serve as Chair of this world-class department. Our mission is to provide outstanding, evidence-based, family-centered, and accessible care that not only treats but nurtures the children we serve, ensuring they and their communities thrive. In today’s world, challenges to children's health and access to care are increasingly shaped by social determinants that cannot be ignored. We are committed to addressing these challenges by building meaningful connections with communities to ensure our care is responsive, inclusive, and transformative.

Our dedication to excellence extends beyond clinical care. We are committed to shaping the next generation of healthcare leaders. Our educational programs are designed to reflect the rich diversity of the patients we serve, and we are proud of our medical school and residency program’s commitment to this diversity. Galveston and the university community offer a welcoming environment that supports the success of our learners. To our medical students, residents, and fellows: You are the future of pediatrics. Thank you for choosing UTMB as the place to hone your skills and expand your knowledge. You are among the brightest minds in the country, and we are dedicated to providing you with experiences and opportunities that will set the foundation for your careers. We are here to support you every step of the way.

Research is a cornerstone of our mission. As one of the leading academic pediatric programs in the nation, we strive to understand disease mechanisms and develop cutting-edge therapies that will redefine pediatric care standards. Our departmental research will impact research advancements, including new vaccines and therapeutic agents for viral respiratory infections, proteomics and genomic/epigenomic-based discoveries of biomarkers and airway disease pathogenesis, identification of early antecedents of adult health, impact of specific social–environmental influences on biology and health, and quality improvement science. It is an extraordinary time of new research tools that include electronic health records, technological ability to manage big data and measure “omics,” and new functional and structural imaging modalities. These tools will discern mechanisms leading to health and disease with new prevention targets and cures.

None of this would be possible without our exceptional faculty, other qualified healthcare professionals and staff who come to work every day with the singular goal of achieving our mission of helping our patients and their families. Your dedication and pursuit of excellence are the foundation of our success. I am deeply grateful for your relentless commitment to achieving the highest standards in pediatric care.

UTMB's School of Medicine boasts the ninth largest medical enrollment in the country and graduates approximately 240 physicians per year. We are training the next generation of physician leaders in Medicine. We offer a brand new, state-of-the-art Medical Education Center with a 77-bed simulated hospital. Established in 1924, as one of the original departments at UTMB and one of the first departments of pediatrics in the nation, our department has provided over 100 years of training in our specialty and subspecialties. We are proud of our UTMB students, residents, and fellows who have gone on to care for populations around the world and to make significant contributions to the world's medical knowledge and innovation.
