Division of Clinical Chemistry

Clinical Pathology

Anthony O. Okorodudu, PhD, MBAWelcome! The Division of Clinical Chemistry is comprised of 3 main sections: Automated High Volume Laboratory, Special Procedures/Toxicology Laboratory, and ABG Satellite Laboratories/POCT. Clinical Chemistry services with test menu that  mirror the main Galveston campus menu are provided at the four satellite campuses – Angleton, Huntsville, League City, and Webster. Most sections provide 24 hours a day service for the patient care requirements in the UTMB Health System. The division also has administrative and technical oversight for the Clients Services and Outreach Laboratory Services in the Department of Pathology. The test menu includes more than 200 test items with an annual volume in excess of 2.5 million tests. The Clinical Chemistry Laboratories have a core staff of 25 FTEs. In addition, we have 2 doctorate level faculty members who are responsible for the scientific, clinical, technical and administrative direction of the division. The third doctoral position is a fellow in an accredited postdoctoral training program.

Postdoctoral Fellowship

Postdoctoral training in clinical chemistry will be entirely on campus at UTMB. The patient population at UTMB is excellent with a full range of pediatric and adult medical and surgical cases.

Postdoctoral fellows will train with pathology residents. Responsibilities include seminars, selected medical lectures, journal club, selected topics in laboratory management, night call and clinical rounds. Management experience is incorporated into both years of training. Fellows also present lectures in selected topics, participate in the division's Director On-Call Service, and are assigned specific sections of the laboratory where they have technical responsibilities.

Special strengths of the UTMB program include scheduled didactic lectures, ward rounds, and scheduled rotation through all areas of the laboratory in the first six months, yearly in-service examinations, and use of state-of-the-art instrumentation. The fellows are also required to be involved in basic and applied research projects with focus in the areas of intracellular ions homeostasis, molecular toxicology, proteomics and pharmacogenomics.
