Immunology and Global Health: Science with a Legacy

Dr. Alan Landay, PhD

Science is constantly evolving, and for over 40 years, Dr. Alan Landay has contributed to this progress in the fields of immunology, HIV, and infectious diseases. His research has centered around understanding how pathogens interact with the host immune system and how that can be used to improve public health. From the early days of the HIV epidemic to today's global health challenges, Dr. Landay has been at the forefront—not just as a scientist but as a leader—transforming research into meaningful solutions around the world.

Dr. Landay’s work is based on the One Health principle that human, animal, and environmental health are connected.  His research goes beyond disease transmission between species. Instead of looking at immune responses in isolation, Dr. Landay is studying how host immune mechanisms align or diverge across species. This is key to not only understanding zoonotic diseases, but predicting the transmission and prevention of outbreaks, like COVID-19 and Ebola, before they start. In comparing host immune responses, scientists can design new strategies for vaccines and therapies that work across different biological systems. At UTMB, Dr. Landay collaborates with field research teams in Latin America, Africa, and the Caribbean. Their research, and the driving force behind all scientific discovery, goes beyond theory—it directly impacts vaccine development, improves pandemic preparedness, and strengthens health systems worldwide.

Dr. Landay interconnection of health

Scientific breakthroughs don’t happen in a vacuum, which is why Dr. Landay aims to build UTMB into an internationally recognized leader of interdisciplinary research. By bringing together academic and private sectors, he ensures solutions are innovative and sustainable. His approach recognizes that public health problems can’t be solved from one perspective—they require the convergence of expertise across multiple fields.

At the core of Dr. Landay’s work is a fundamental belief: research should not only engage communities but also serve and uplift them. With first-hand knowledge of how low-income countries face systemic barriers including lack of infrastructure, fragmented healthcare systems, and limited access to medical innovation. His work is not just about data collection, it’s about making sure research translates into long-term benefits for the people affected by these diseases. For Dr. Landay, science is most powerful when it creates lasting change. Whether it’s through his HIV research, development of common diagnostic tools, or his work on health disparities, he believes research shouldn’t just study problems but solves them while improving lives.

Timeline of Dr. Landay's Contribution to HIV Research

When asked what advice he would give to students and/or researchers, Dr. Landay simply said, “UTMB is the right place”. It’s more than a statement about UTMB as an institution; it’s about the magic of collaboration, curiosity, and compassion - the core philosophy of the One Health initiative.
