Have you ever wondered how to prepare for the mother of all emergencies — the day the zombies attack? Well, wonder no more. The next Sci Café presentation “Emergency Response: Getting Prepared for the Zombie Apocalypse!” will feature Mike Mastrangelo, UTMB director of institutional preparedness, and Garret Foskit, emergency management coordinator for the city of Galveston. Sci Café will start at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Mod Coffeehouse, 2126 Postoffice St., in Galveston. By the way, the Centers for Disease Control has a site dedicated to zombie preparedness. The tongue-in-cheek CDC zombie campaign began as a way to get people to pay attention to emergency preparedness. And, hence, the Sci Café presentation.

Boo! Don’t get scared; go have some fun

It’s time for the UTMB Fall Festival. The free event will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Jamail Student Center Plaza on the Galveston campus, which is located at the circle end of The Strand, 11th and Strand streets. There will be snacks, games, a Halloween costume contest and a dunking booth. Free parking is available at a lot located on Mechanic Street, between 12th and 13th streets. Canned food donations will be accepted and distributed to a local food pantry.

Students Tutak and Saenz win Garcia Awards

The winners of the 2017 Hector P. Garcia Cultural Competence Award are: Stephanie Lynne Tutak, a fourth-year student in the School of Medicine, for her essay on creating treatment environments with culturally competent care, and Florentino Saenz, a first-year student in the School of Medicine for his poster, “Determining the Role of Stress Management in Improving Health Outcomes.” The awards are in honor of Garcia, a 1940 UTMB graduate who went on to serve during World War II. When the war ended, he saw the prejudices and injustices that Mexican-American veterans were subjected to and began a lifelong crusade to ensure equal rights, especially in education and health care. His daughter, Cecilia Garcia Akers, was the featured speaker.

Garcia-Blanco to speak at annual dean’s lecture

Dr. Mariano Garcia-Blanco is the featured speaker at the Graduate School for Biomedical Sciences Dean’s Lecture. Garcia-Blanco’s presentation, “Multiple Sclerosis: Insights into the Causes and a New Path for Therapy,” is at 4 p.m. Friday in Levin Hall on the Galveston campus. Holiday fashion show benefits school of nursing

The sixth annual Holiday Style Fashion Show & Luncheon will be at 11 a.m. Nov. 14 at the Galveston Island Convention Center at the San Luis Resort and Spa. The event, featuring fashions from Tootsies, raises scholarship money for the honors program at the UTMB School of Nursing.
