During the American Osler Society’s annual meeting Dr. Joan Richardson, professor, provider and chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Medical Branch, was appointed as the organization’s new president.
Comprised of physicians, medical historians and members of related professions who strive to keep alive the memory, teachings, philosophies and practices of Sir William Osler, the group first met in 1971. To this day, its members and officers strive to uphold the fundamental principles of Oslerian medicine which include:
- Compassionate, personalized medical care that emphasizes the doctor/patient relationship,
- Incorporation of a sound scientific basis for optimal patient care, and
- Professional behavior at all times.
“What an honor and privilege to be trusted with such an important role,” Richardson said. “I will do everything in my ability to support the organization and its mission to the fullest throughout the duration of my term.”
Richardson’s appointment is just one of many examples of UTMB experts serving the larger academic medicine community.
“We are thrilled with Dr. Richardson’s recent appointment as president of the American Osler Society,” said UTMB President Dr. Jochen Reiser. “She will represent UTMB well and the insight and expertise she has to share will prove invaluable for that group.”
