Learning Objectives
- Students should have a comprehensive understanding of Sir William Osler and his contemporaries.
- Students should be able to make a formal Abstract or Poster Presentation.
- Students should be able to summarize their presentation in a concise narrative.
- Students should develop a better understanding of academic medicine.

Describe the qualifications background and career goals or interests of students who would benefit from the course:
Any student interested in the academic practice of internal medicine and the history of medicine.

Description of course activities
Student will meet with the course director on the first day to set the agenda and agreed upon schedule for the block. Student will read about Sir William Osler and his contributions to medical education. Student will have the option to read about Sir William Osler's contemporaries or other icons in medicine and medical education and their impact on the practice of medicine. Student will work directly with faculty one day per week in a clinical setting to develop a better understanding of academic medicine.

1.  Grading
   
A. Please specify your grading criteria for outstanding performance:
  Students must attend one weekly clinical session with faculty. Grade will be determined on level of participation. Student must also submit an abstract proposal on their history of medicine project including their essay. Student should consider submitting their abstract proposal to the Annual Osler Symposium.

2.  Written Assignment (Homework, projects, notes, papers, abstracts, etc.)
A. Frequency of written assignment(s)
  A written presentation should be turned in at the end of the rotation. The length of the paper should be at least 10 pages of double-spaced text with at least 5 journal-based references listed on the last page. Students must also submit a one-page abstract proposal on their assigned topic in the history of medicine.
B. Type of written assignment
  Seminars or tutorials culminating in a research paper.
Basic science research plus documented written report.
Humanities, social sciences, biostatistical or epidemiological research culminating in a scholarly paper or written report.
Clinically-based written reports focusing on a basic science or humanities problem.
Journal club written reports
Grant proposals
Literature review
Oral presentation plus written report.
Other modality with a self-directed, scholarly research component culminating in a written report.

  The format should be written in journal-style format with the goal of an essay publication or abstract submission.

3.  Oral Presentation

    Student will meet weekly with faculty to discuss their project.

    Abstract should be submitted to the Annual Osler Symposium. If accepted, the student will either give a 20-minute abstract presentation or poster presentation.

4.  Professionalism

The instructor will discuss principles of appropriate attribution and the referencing of literature with the student. The student is expected to understand and to adhere to the principle that all presented work must be solely the student’s own.

    Students should exhibit professional behavior during clinical encounters.
