Learning Objectives
Students will be introduced to research in population and public health through working with faculty in ongoing research projects.

Students who successfully complete this course will be prepared to:

1. Develop an answerable research question relevant to public health;
2. Locate and synthesize the pertinent literature and or data; and
3. Discuss the implications of the research for the practice of clinical medicine and public health.

Describe the qualifications background and career goals or interests of students who would benefit from the course:
This course is appropriate for medical students interested in public health careers or concerned about public health issues. The course is a required selective in the Public Health Scholarly Concentration.

Description of course activities
Students will be paired with a faculty member conducting basic or applied research relevant to public health. The faculty mentor will work with the student to complete a systematic literature review or empirical research project. Examples of recent public health student projects include: a systematic review of the effectiveness of patient pain contracts in indigent care clinics; development of a program evaluation framework for a community-based diabetes education program; a descriptive epidemiological analysis of lead poisoning in Galveston County; and collection and analysis of information on obesity prevention programs in county school districts.

  Evidence of weekly progress based on meetings and communication with faculty mentor. Successful completion of a scholarly project (e.g. systematic review paper, evaluation plan, descriptive data report). Students will be asked to present their work at the National Public Health Week Symposium.

The instructor will discuss principles of appropriate attribution and the referencing of literature with the student. The student is expected to understand and to adhere to the principle that all presented work must be solely the student’s own.
