Learning Objectives
The topic will be assigned during discussion between the faculty and student prior to the beginning of the selective. The written product will be in the form a case report that will detail the findings of a unique and interesting radiology case from UTMB. The written report will review the basic science topics of relevant anatomy, etiology, pathophysiology, laboratory techniques, radiological findings, and the pharmacological and surgical mechanisms of therapeutic options for the topic chosen. The report will be based on literature review of the above topics and will also include current recommendations of diagnosis and management of the topic. In addition, the student will gain experience in professional writing with the goal of submission for publication.

Students interested in a career in radiology will benefit from this selective.

Description of course activities
1. The student will attend grand rounds and departmental meetings.
2. The students duties will include chart review, literature review, and presentation.
3. The student will prepare a written report with the possibility of submission for publication.

  The student will be evaluated on a pass/fail basis. Criteria will include quality of written report, attendance at meetings and grand rounds, and discussions with faculty and staff.

A. Frequency of written assignment(s)
  At least one written report will be required.
B. Type of written assignment
  Seminars or tutorials culminating in a research paper.
Basic science research plus documented written report.

    Will present data/analysis on a weekly basis to faculty. Final paper may be presented in a national radiology conference and possibly a noon conference.

4.  Professionalism
  What expectations do you have for the student to demonstrate participation in the elective (e.g. small group activities, seminars, thoughtful questions, providing resources, journal club, resident lecture attendance)?

The instructor will discuss principles of appropriate attribution and the referencing of literature with the student. The student is expected to understand and to adhere to the principle that all presented work must be solely the student’s own.

    The faculty involved will provide supervision and advice regarding appropriateness of case selection, review and critique of written report and literature reference.
