Specimen Requirements:
Collection:

Bone marrow aspirate, CSF, serous fluids, blood. Collect in EDTA. Invert promptly to prevent clotting. CSF- standard sterile tube.

Storage/Transport:

All types of specimens should be delivered to lab promptly. Bone marrow aspirates should be delivered within 30 minutes.

Causes for Rejection:

QNS, old specimen, identification errors, receipt in lab after hours unless prior arrangements made.

Reference Range:

Normal bone marrow is positive for hemosiderin. All body fluids should be negative

Turnaround Time:

 24 hours

Methodology:

 Cytochemical demonstration of iron-bearing pigment (Perl’s Prussian Blue); Microscopy.

Performed:

 Bone Marrow Aspirate samples are accepted 8AM - 2PM, Monday-Friday, Room 5.142, McCullough. Body fluids and peripheral blood accepted 24 hours.

Clinical Indication:

Classification of anemias, detection of CNS hemorrhage and to evaluate bone marrow iron stores.
