SEDIMENTATION RATE (8000100020) | |
---|---|
Test Mnemonic: | ESRWEST
Specimen Requirements: | |
Collection: | Routine venipuncture; Collect in EDTA (lavender tube) or Streck ESR Vacuum Tube.
Container: | EDTA (lavender tube) or Streck ESR Vacuum Tube. |
Minimum Volume: | Streck ESR Vacuum Tube 1.2 mL (up to fill line on Tube).
Storage/Transport: |
For best results, deliver to lab within 4 hours. Refrigeration is required for samples that may be delayed in delivery to the lab.
Stability: | ESR-Vacuum Tubes preserve the integrity of the patient sample for up to 4 hours at 18-30°C, and 72 hours if stored at 2° to 10°C. EDTA samples are stable up to 4 hours at room temperature and 24 hours when refrigerated.
Causes for Rejection: | QNS, clotted, severely hemolyzed specimen, unrefrigerated specimen greater than 4 hours old, identification errors.
Reference Range: | Males: 0-10 mm/hour; Females: 0-20 mm/hour
Turnaround Time: | ROUTINE: 8 hours; STAT not available
Methodology: | The sedimentation rate of erythrocytes is measured in Streck ESR-Vacuum tubes. Results are recorded as millimeters per hour (Westergren Method).
Performed: | Specimen accepted 24 hours per day at Sample Management, 7.412 CSW
Clinical Indication: | Non specific screening test that may be increased in acute tissue damage, chronic inflammation, chronic infection, and pregnancy.
CPT 4 Code: | 85652
Note: | Sedimentation rate specimens should not be double labeled with other Hematopathology tests. Deliver promptly to the lab. Interfering Substances: Gross hemolysis, severe lipemia, clotted sample, hemoglobin <3.0 g/dL, cold agglutinins. Sedimentation rate is affected not only by presnce of plasma proteins, but also by any condition affecting the number, size, or shape of red blood cells.

When ordering tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will be sought, physicians should only order tests that are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of the patient. Components of the organ or disease panels may be ordered individually. The diagnostic information must substantiate all tests ordered and must be in the form of an ICD-10 code or its verbal equivalent. |
