Specimen Requirements:
Collection:

Routine venipuncture; Collect in EDTA (lavender tube). Micro-collection is acceptable.  The specimen should be collected to the appropriate fill volume stated on the collection tube.  The minimum volume required is 90% of the stated tube volume.

Container:

EDTA (lavender tube). Micro-collection is acceptable

Storage/Transport:

 Room Temperature 4 hours .  If testing cannot be completed  within 4 hours sample must be refrigerated at 2-8° C.

Stability:

The peripheral smear is ideally made within 6 hours of collection of the CBC specimen. 

Causes for Rejection:

Clotted; QNS, hemolysis, old specimen, identification error.

 24 hours (Monday-Friday reporting)

Methodology:

 Manual microscopy; Pathologist nterpretation.

Performed:

Samples are accepted 24 hours/day at Sample Management, CSW 7.412.

Review of previously reported abnormal WBC differential or RBC morphologic abnormalities by pathologist.

Note:

Special Instructions: CBC with differential must be previously reported in order to request diff consult. Diff consult can be requested by lab add-on to a previously reported  CBC with Differential specimen or by sending an additional specimen after abnormal differential results have been reported.)
