Specimen Requirements:

Centrifuge the whole blood specimen, remove plasma from red cells, protect plasma from light, and refrigerate or freeze.   Required Volume: 5 mL.

Test Included:

Fluorescence scan of diluted plasma at neutral pH. 

Collection:

Routine venipuncture.

Container:

Green top tube (heparin).

Minimum Volume:

0.5 mL

Stability:

Stable when light protected and refrigerated or frozen.

Causes for Rejection:

Sample hemolyzed or contaminated with red cells, not light protected or not refrigerated or frozen will not be rejected, but their condition will be recorded in the results report.

Reference Range:

0 - 0.9 micrograms/mL.  Flourescence scan is interpreted qualitatively based on peak wavelength.

Routine; test is performed weekly.

First line test for screening for blistering cutaneous porphyrias (e.g., PCT) and (with fluorescence scan) to differentiate variegate porphyria from other porphyrias.
