Collection: | Routine venipuncture. |
Container: | Red top tube (no anticoagulant) or green top tube (heparinized). |

Specimen Preparation: | Centrifuge the whole blood and remove serum/plasma from red cells. Freeze and light protect until analyzed. |
Stability: | Stable when light protected and refrigerated or frozen. |
Causes for Rejection: | Samples not protected from light or not refrigerated or frozen will not be rejected, but their condition on arrival will be recorded in the results report. |
Reference Range: | 0 - 0.6 microgram/mL |
Turnaround Time: | Routine; test is performed semi-weekly. |
Methodology: | Spectrophotometry after separation by ion exchange chromatography and addition of Ehrlich reagent. |

Clinical Indication: | Screening test for acute porphyrias (e.g. AIP) in patients with advanced renal disease. Less sensitive than urine porphobilinogen in patients with normal renal function. |
