The Community Medicine elective and PGY 2 rotation offers residents the chance to give back to Galveston. They learn about the different resources across the island that are available to help the uninsured and homeless population. They also work closely with an interdisciplinary team at St. Vincent’s, the student-run free clinic for the uninsured. This elective highlights the social determinants of health that are sometimes overlooked in the clinical setting and gives our residents the tools to support our most vulnerable patients. All PGY 2 residents have a 2 week required community medicine rotation.
