“ “A Poor Man’s Osler”—Thoughts on Science, Race, and the Future of Humanity
from a Life in Medicine”
Objectives: At this conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
- Explain how William Osler became emblematic of “the heroic age of medicine,” drawing on Malcolm Gladwell’s construct of “outliers” and an analysis of Osler’s character strengths
- Define “a thing of beauty” in the natural sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities as posited by Jerome Kagan, and discuss whether the humanities (as currently understood) are positioned to resolve the major problems facing
humankind
- Discuss how George Sarton’s idea of a “New Humanism” and Van Rensselaer Potter’s definition of “bioethics” apply to human survival and progress through science, humanism, and reason.
Target Audience and Needs: Internal Medicine faculty, staff, registered nurses, residents, fellows, students, and internists specializing in Allergy & Immunology,
Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, General Medicine, Geriatrics, Hematology & Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Palliative Care, Pulmonary Critical Care & Sleep Medicine, and Rheumatology need to be regularly updated
with new research and guidelines regarding the evaluation and management of medical disorders and implement them in clinical practice to enhance the quality of patient care and improve patient outcomes.
Educational Methods: Educational methods will include lectures, case presentations, literature review, and panel discussion.
Activity Evaluation: Participants may be asked to complete a session evaluation.
