I am delighted to announce that Emilio B Gonzalez, MD has been appointed the Hornstein Professorship in Internal Medicine in Memory of Edna and William C. Levin, MD celebrating UTMB’s 125th Anniversary. Since 2004, Dr. Gonzalez has served as Division
Chief of Rheumatology and has been employed with UTMB in a clinical aspect for over 40 years.
Dr. Emilio B. Gonzalez is professor of medicine and director of the division of rheumatology at UTMB. He joined the UTMB faculty in 2004 from Emory University and Atlanta Medical Center, in Atlanta, Georgia. He trained in allergy, immunology and rheumatology
at the universities of Pittsburgh, Colorado, and Texas in Galveston. He is Board-certified in internal medicine, allergy-immunology, and rheumatology.
Dr. Gonzalez has published over 100 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals including 15 textbook chapters, including the Kelly’s rheumatology textbook. He has served as the principal investigator in a number of research studies dealing with
newer therapies in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, gout, and the antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a founding fellow of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR), being elected
an ACR Master in 2014. In 1996, he served as president of the Georgia society of rheumatology, and in 2004, as chairman of the medical & scientific committee of the Arthritis Foundation, Georgia chapter, in Atlanta. While at Emory, Dr. Gonzalez
was the recipient of the Golden Apple award for excellence in teaching at Grady Memorial Hospital, department of medicine. While at UTMB, since 2011, he was elected as a Texas Super Doc for several years, and as one of America’s Top Doctors
(Castle Connolly Medical Ltd). At UTMB, he was elected a member of the UTMB Academy of Master Teachers, and in 2009 appointed as a distinguished teaching professor by the University of Texas Board of Regents.
