Due to construction activity related to the new Jennie Sealy Hospital and Clinical Services Wing, and concern for the safety of our employees, patients, and community members, the traffic pattern for the streets encircling the University Plaza Garage will change effective Monday, March 12.

Texas Avenue, the street north of the garage, will change to two-way traffic; however, it will be closed where it passes the construction site between Sixth Street (University Blvd.) and the Waverley Smith Pavilion.

Two-way traffic also will be restored on nearby streets – Fifth Street, Mechanic Street and Darrel Royal Avenue. The changes will allow through traffic access to Holiday Drive from Texas Avenue and Darrel Royal Avenue.

Due to the change in traffic patterns, employees who park in the University Plaza Garage will be unable to enter the upper level on the north side from Texas Avenue. However, since the street along the south side of the garage also is changing to two-way, access to the garage still will be available at both levels.

Access to the Sealy & Smith Garage will not be affected.

Please avoid using the Sixth Street entrances to campus unless you park in the University Plaza or Sealy & Smith garages. Fourth Street (Holiday Drive) is an alternate route around that area. Also be aware that construction traffic will be using the streets around the University Plaza Garage for the delivery of materials.  If you do need to walk or drive in this area, please use caution and be sure to look both ways when crossing the street—especially as drivers are getting used to the new traffic patterns.

Officers from University Police will be on site Monday to direct traffic.

Construction is expected to be completed in 2016.
