The UTMB School of Nursing received approval for a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree in November 2011, and the first class of students entered the program in January 2012. The community is invited to comment on the program as part of the accreditation process by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. Comments are due by Sept. 9. Research volunteers
Volunteers are needed for an asthma research study. Individuals may qualify for one of UTMB’s studies if they have a history of physician-diagnosed asthma and are 18 to 65 and a non-smoker for at least one year. International research
Cheyenne Martin, the Rebecca and Edwin Gale Professor of Ethics in the School of Nursing, presented “Medical warriors and resistors during the Holocaust” at a conference co-sponsored by the Association of Holocaust Organizations and the Texas Holocaust and Genocide Commission. The conference draws participants internationally who are affiliated with Holocaust organizations and museums as well as Holocaust and genocide scholars.
Incontinence study
The UTMB Pelvic Health Center is conducting a research study on a new investigational vaginal insert device to control accidental bowel leakage or fecal incontinence, a condition that affects 15 million American women of all ages. Women may be eligible to participate in the study if they are between 19 and 75 and have a history of FI for at least six months. For more information, call 409-772-5164
Summer clinics
The occupational therapy and physical therapy departments at the UTMB School of Health Professions will hold two weeklong clinics this summer providing free therapy for people with neurological disease and injury, including but not limited to stroke, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. Musculoskeletal clinic
The physical therapy department in the UTMB School of Health Professions is offering a musculoskeletal clinic the weeks of June 24-28 and July 8-12. State-of-the-art scanning
The emergency room has recently added a state-of-the-art CT scanner that provides high definition scans in seconds, making it easier for the radiologist to read the scan and for the attending physician to obtain a more accurate report for diagnosis and treatment. Another feature allows for better assessment of the entire brain for stroke patients, providing another tool for the accredited stroke program.
