The UTMB Dermatology Interest Group (DIG) hosted the AIM for a Cure Melanoma Walk at the UTMB alumni track. The AIM mission is to increase support for melanoma research; to promote prevention and education among the general public and medical professionals; and to provide comprehensive and easily accessible melanoma resources for patients, survivors, and caregivers. Participants from the community showed their support by spending their Saturday morning walking or running 3.2 miles around the track (with sunscreen protection, of course).

Ball High School graduates utilized the Drunk Driving Simulator during Project Graduation. UTMB Center for Addiction Research staff and students volunteered at the event making the simulator and addiction research and treatment information available to more than 400 Ball High graduates.
The Marian W. Fischman Memorial Lectureship Award was established in honor of Dr. Marian Weinbaum Fischman, a mentor to a generation of young investigators interested in the field of drug abuse. Fischman was an inspiration to many women in the sciences and a passionate advocate for both research and ethics. The College on Problems of Drug Dependence, the largest and oldest organization for the scientific study of drug dependence and addiction, has presented the award annually since 2002.
Cunningham is the Chauncey Leake Distinguished Professor of Pharmacology, Vice Chairman of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology and the Director of the Center for Addiction Research at UTMB. Her highly successful research program has made multiple contributions to our understanding of the neuropsychopharmacology of abused drugs, the underlying neurobiology of the addictive process, and new target and drug discovery in addictive disorders.
She has held continuous funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) for the past 24 years, with several prestigious grants including a K05 Senior Scientist Award, a P20 planning center, and a T32 training program for students and postdocs, which is currently in its 19th year.
Mentoring has been a cornerstone of Cunningham’s career. Over the past two decades she has mentored dozens of undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty members, instilling in them the same qualities that she commands of herself: excellence, integrity, and accuracy in research, exceptional grantsmanship and communication skills, professionalism, perseverance, leadership and collaboration.
Congratulations to Dr. Michelle Mercatante of UTMB's Adult Primary and Specialty Care in Texas City for being chosen by Us News And World Reports 2013 as one of the top 1500 internists in the country. This elite group of physicians were selected based on a peer nomination process.
