Emergency Room Technician 1 at UTMB Angleton ER
When did you start work for UTMB?
I started in the beginning of June 2024 as hospital aide and then transitioned to ER tech in the beginning of September 2024.
What are you most excited about working at UTMB?
I'm most excited about contributing to the fast-paced environment like the ER. The opportunity to work with a team and help provide care to patients during their most vulnerable moments is both challenging and rewarding. I am also eager to grow professionally and keep learning from the colleagues around me!
Is there anything about your job that surprised/surprises you?
One thing that surprised me about working nights in the ER is how supportive the team is. You might expect the night shift to feel isolating, but everyone has got each other's back. It's surprising how much you can learn from your colleagues during those quieter moments between the rushes.
Tell us about your life outside of work.
Outside of work, I'm a college student working toward becoming a nurse, which keeps me pretty busy. When I have free time, I enjoy spending it with family and friends or relaxing with a good show to watch.
What has been your most meaningful accomplishment so far?
My most meaningful accomplishment so far has been earning my EMT certification during my senior year of high school. It was a challenging process that required me to push myself outside of my comfort zone, both academically and personally. The experience taught me a lot about discipline and resilience which has been invaluable as I continue pursuing my career in health care.
What would you like to be remembered for?
I would like to be remembered as someone who was both kind and hardworking. I want people to see me as someone who genuinely cared about others, whether it was through the support I gave to my team or the compassion I showed to patients. At the same time, I hope to be known for my dedication in everything I do!
Signing Day
Abigail comes to UTMB through a partnership with the Brazosport Independent School District, part of UTMB's effort to recruit talent in creative ways through partnerships with school districts.
"She is our success story from our first signing day with BISD," said Olivia Garner, nurse program manager for corporate education at UTMB. "She went from PBL hospital aide to full-time ER tech in under three months."
