Dr. Alexander Bukreyev, a Professor in the Departments of Pathology and Microbiology & Immunology, and Dr. Jere McBride, Professor of Pathology, have been honored by the American Academy of Microbiology by being named to the 2025 Class of Fellows.

The Academy admitted just 65 Fellows from around the world to the 2025 Class. This year's class featured Fellows from nine countries including Australia, Denmark, Mexico, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and the United States.

Fellows are elected every year through a highly selective, peer-review process based on their records of scientific achievement and original contributions that have advanced microbiology. Dr. Bukreyev and Dr. McBride join a distinguished group of 2600 international fellows.

Dr. Bukreyev's lab focuses on investigation of the mechanisms of the high pathogenicity of viruses including Ebola, Marburg and Lassa and the development of vaccines and antibody treatments against these viruses. Dr. McBride is an expert on Ehrlichia spp and other tick-borne pathogens, conducting both basic and translational research.  He is Director of the Experimental Pathology Graduate Program at UTMB.

Colleagues, staff and students at UTMB all benefit from the leadership and commitment of these distinguished professionals who dedicate their time and expertise not only to their impressive research portfolios, but to educating and leading the next generation of scientists in advancing microbiology and improving global health.
