Dr. Tom Ksiazek Reaches 40,000 Citations
The number of times other scientists reference your work is a common measure of success, and Dr. Tom Ksiazek recently hit a new benchmark of 40,000 citations.
Dr. Ksiazek, Director of High Containment Operations at the GNL, has focused his career on high consequence pathogens, including SARS, Ebola and Hantavirus. His publications in these areas have informed thousands of other scientists and led to advanced learning and innovative medical countermeasures.
Following a distinguished career in both the Air Force and the Army that allowed him to live and work in diverse locations around the world, Dr. Ksiazek joined the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, ultimately serving a the Director of Special Pathogens. Through the years he has played a significant role in both disease discovery and outbreak response efforts in Asia, Africa, South America and the Middle East.
Dr. Ksiazek is an expert in hemorrhagic fevers, such as Ebola, and viral diseases. He is credited as being one of the co-discoverers of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), which appeared in China in 2002. His quick work in identifying the virus is often credited as one reason this fast spreading and deadly disease was quickly contained.
The list of awards and honors for Dr. Ksiazek is extensive. He is a three time recipient of the Secretary of Health and Human Services Award, received a Lifetime Achievement Award for Filovirus Science at the International Filovirus Symposium and was named Distinguished Alumnus of the Kansas State College of Veterinary Medicine.
