At UTMB Health, physical therapy is provided through the Department of Rehabilitation Services, offering both inpatient and outpatient services.
- Inpatient PT is provided at the Galveston, League City, Clear Lake, and Angleton hospital campuses. In FY 24, PT had 18,395 inpatient encounters (including through the Correctional Managed Care program), averaging about 1,532 consults a month.
- Outpatient services are available at the Primary Care Pavilion, League City Campus, Clear Lake Campus, Bay Colony, and Angleton-Danbury Campus. In FY24 all four outpatient clinics had a total of 20,742 scheduled new patients and completed 50,759 combined new evaluations and follow-up visits. 23% of all patients seen last year were new evaluations.
- The department has a total of 89 team members across all locations (excluding support staff).
- The vast majority of all patients come to PT through a physician referral. PT also receives referrals from dentists and Advanced Practice Providers.
- Some indications for referral to physical therapy include:
- Cardiopulmonary conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, and post-myocardial infarction, heart failure
- Conditions that affect the hand, such as carpal tunnel syndrome and trigger finger
- • Musculoskeletal dysfunction, including back pain, rotator cuff tears, and temporomandibular joint disorders, joint replacements
- Neurological conditions, such as stroke, spinal cord injuries, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, vestibular dysfunction, and traumatic brain injuries
- Pediatric conditions that affect infants, children and adolescents, including developmental delay, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, torticollis, and muscular dystrophy and neuromuscular and musculoskeletal conditions
- Sports-related injuries, such as concussion, and tennis elbow
- Female health and pelvic floor dysfunction, including pain, urinary incontinence and lymphedema
